The battle of the Somme stands as one of the darkest days in British military history. It was fought during World War I, between July and November 1916, along the banks of the river Somme in France. The objective was to break through the German lines and relieve pressure on the French forces at Verdun. However, the battle turned into a brutal and bloody stalemate.
