On D-Day, Sword Beach was one of the five landing zones along the coast of Normandy, France. It was assigned to the British 2nd Army as part of Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious assault in history. Several regiments and divisions took part in the 'assault', the initial landing with the objective to secure a beachhead and establish a foothold for the Allied forces, allowing them to advance further inland. On the morning of June 6, 1944, British troops, supported by naval and air bombardments, stormed the beach under heavy German fire. Despite strong resistance, the British were able to successfully land and quickly push inland, eventually linking up with other Allied forces. The Sword Beach landing played a crucial role in the success of the overall D-Day invasion, as it allowed the Allies to gain a strategic position and begin the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
