ETA, which stands for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, is a Basque separatist organization that was active in the Basque Country and Spain for over five decades. Founded in 1959, ETA aimed to establish an independent Basque state through armed struggle. The organization conducted numerous terrorist attacks, including bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings, causing significant loss of life and immense social unrest. Despite the violence, ETA also engaged in political activities and advocated for Basque nationalism and self-determination. In 2011, ETA announced a definitive cessation of its armed activities, and in 2018, it formally dissolved. Throughout its existence, ETA left a lasting impact on the Basque region, as well as on Spanish society, and its legacy continues to shape the political landscape in the area.
