On 6th June 1944, the Allied forces launched a monumental operation known as D-Day to liberate occupied Europe from the Nazis. As part of this operation, three British and Commonwealth beach landings took place on the coast of Normandy in northern France. These landings were codenamed Sword, Gold, and Juno. Sword Beach, located on the easternmost side, was the objective of the British 3rd Infantry Division and was crucial for securing the city of Caen. Gold Beach, just west of Sword, was the target for the British 50th Infantry Division and was vital for establishing a link between the British and Canadian forces. Juno Beach, positioned to the east of Gold, was the primary objective of the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division. These beach landings were pivotal in the success of the larger D-Day operation and marked a significant turning point in World War II.
