In 1922, the Irish Free State was formed as a result of the Anglo-Irish Treaty signed between the British government and representatives of the Irish Republic. This treaty aimed to end the armed conflict between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and British forces during the Irish War of Independence. Under the terms of the treaty, Ireland was granted limited independence from British rule. The Irish Free State was established as a self-governing dominion within the British Commonwealth, with a Governor-General representing the British monarch as the head of state. However, it still maintained a close relationship with the United Kingdom. The Irish Free State faced several challenges in its early years, including a civil war between pro- and anti-treaty factions. Nevertheless, it marked a significant step towards Irish independence and laid the foundation for the eventual creation of the Republic of Ireland in 1949.
