In the early 20th century, Finland was a Grand Duchy under Russian rule. However, as tensions escalated during World War I and the Russian Revolution, Finland saw an opportunity to seek its independence. In 1917, the Finnish Parliament, known as the Eduskunta, declared Finland an independent state. This declaration was followed by negotiations with Russia, resulting in the signing of the Finnish Independence Act in December of the same year. The Act recognized Finland as an independent nation, ending its ties to the Russian Empire. The road to independence was not without challenges, as Finland faced internal divisions and conflicts with Russia, but ultimately, the country successfully established itself as a sovereign state. Finland's journey to independence from Russia marked a significant turning point in its history, paving the way for the development of its own political, economic, and cultural identity.
