On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This event sparked a chain reaction of events that ultimately led to the outbreak of World War I. Ferdinand's assassination was carried out by a Bosnian-Serb nationalist named Gavrilo Princip. Princip, along with a group of fellow conspirators, planned and executed the assassination as a protest against Austro-Hungarian rule over Bosnia. As Ferdinand's motorcade passed by, Princip fired two shots, killing both the Archduke and his wife, Sophie. The aftermath of the assassination resulted in Austria-Hungary issuing an ultimatum to Serbia, which set off a series of diplomatic tensions and military mobilizations. In turn, these tensions escalated into a full-scale war, involving major powers from around the world. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand remains a significant event in history, marking a turning point that unleashed widespread destruction and suffering.
