Let's talk about 1994

Has it really been 30 years since 1994? A year, notable for Nelson Mandela. Having spent many years locked up in jail due to his fight to gain rights for his fellow black South Africans, Nelson Mandela was elected President this same year.

Other events shaping 1994 include: Continued conflict in The Balkans; A version of 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch is stolen; Yasser Arafat returns to the Gaza strip; Female priests are ordained by the Church of England; BBC 5Live starts broadcasting; the Rwandan massacre begins this year and disgraced former American president Richard Nixon, dies.

The music industry continues strong throughout 1994 which acts as diverse as Wet Wet Wet who seem impossible to displace from the No.1 spot in the UK; Oasis release their debut album, Definitely, Maybe to widespread appraise; KLF burn £1,000,000 in protest towards the music industry practices; Green day release 'Dookie' album; the Offspring release 'Smash', the biggest selling independant album ever.

1994 becomes a year of classic cinema with a plethora of fabulous movies coming to the silver screen. Some of our favourites include: Pulp Fiction which creates a new form of story telling with people memorising the lines of Samuel L Jackson in particular; Interview with a vampire keeping that genre alive and kicking; Lion King mesmerising children and adults alike with its fabulous score from Elton John; Shawshank Redemption, often voted the greatest film of all time; from New Zealand, Once were warriors, a heart-breaking story of a once proud nation;Johhny Depp going trans in Ed Wood; The Mask showcasing the facial talent of Jim Carrey; Four weddings and a funeral which catapulted Hugh Grant to international status and Natural Born Killers with Woody Harelson and Juliet Lewis in standout roles.

On the small screen, we were invited to join 'Friends' at the Central Perk Cafe; ER details the complexities of hospital life; Vicar of Dibleys typical British sitcom simplicity; Due South bringing a Canadian mountie south into US jurisdiction; Ellen with a strong female lead; Johnny Depps favourite off the wall comedy sketch show 'The Fast show' and the Time team finding archeological goodies all over the UK.

With this incredible array of world and cultural events, came the births and sadly, deaths from around the planet. Those born this year include: Harry Styles; Dakota Fanning; Justin Bieber; Saoirse Ronan; Tom Daley; Camilla Mendes; Lil Baby and Hoyeon.

Those who left us include: Cesar Romero actor; Harry Nillson musician; Matt Busby footballer; John Kirby cartoonist; Kurt Cobain musician; John Candy actor; Aryton Senna Grand prix driver; Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis former first lady; Peter Cushing actor and Jessica Tandy actress.
